I recently decided to bite the bullet and upgrade my site from Mambo 4.5.2 to the latest release of Joomla. I had been putting it off since frankly, it is a lot of effort to go through and from the front end the site looks no different!

But I wanted to install some new components and besides, I had decided to throw in my weight behind Joomla so I went through the pain.

Click on ‘Read more’ below to read the full upgrade story:

Here are some guidelines if you ever want to upgrade. These guidelines can also roughly be used if you just want to move your Joomla installation from one server to another.

There are lots of threads on this topic on the Joomla site as well and believe me, I trawled them all. The main guidelines that you want to read are the following:

http://help.joomla.org/content/view/818/132/

This topic gives you a high level overview of upgrading from Mambo 4.5.2 to Joomla 1.0.X. Please note that this assumes that you are upgrading from Mambo 4.5.2 – this is relatively straightforward. If you are upgrading from a previous version of Mambo, you might find this thread of use – written by Phil Taylor and posted both on his blog as well as in the Joomla Forum:

http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,36395.0.html

In my case, I went from Mambo 4.5.2 to Joomla 1.0.9

In general:

The databases are not different at the moment, so your upgrade really consists of

1. Installing the new code (Joomla .php files)
2. Ensuring that the code for your installed modules and components are also copied to your Joomla installation.

If you have Cpanel and Fantastico installed on your hosting service you may be tempted to make use of the upgrade path offered by the Fantastico installer.

Do not do this!

This will install the latest version of Joomla over your Mambo installation and you will not loose your content, however, your third party components and modules will be gone. This can potentially be a disaster, as you can imagine. It is much better to follow the manual route, even though it is more time consuming.

I am therefore going to follow the general steps as laid out by the help guide on Joomla.org but add a couple of other tips to make the going a bit easier.

Step 1: Copy all your Joomla files to a new directory on your server

Here is a good way to copy all your Joomla files to your server. If you have Cpanel available, make use of the File Manager in CPanel. First copy the .zip file containing all your Joomla files to your selected directory on your server using your normal FTP program, then use your CPanel file manager to very quickly unzip this file. If you do it this way it goes very quickly and all your files will be in the right formats.

Why is this important? Sometimes when you copy files through your normal FTP program you might mess up the file formats because normal text files must be transferred using ASCII format and all executable files (especially those used by your WYSIWYG editors) must be transferred in Binary format. Now, some FTP programs automatically decide the format and it is not a problem, however, if you do it this way you know that the formats are correct.

Step 2: Make sure all your directories have the correct file permissions

Some of your directories might or might not have the correct file permissions. A quick and easy way to check is to run the first step of the Joomla installer. You will find this in the Installation folder of your new Joomla folder. The first step in the installation process will tell you which file permissions are not correct. Correct the file permissions through your CHMOD function in your FTP program or your file manager in your CPanel. Make a list of all the directories that should be writable! You might use this later again to check, AFTER you have moved your Joomla files over permanently to the root.

Then DELETE the installations folder. You should NOT go ahead and install Joomla through this Installations folder, it will overwrite your database.

Step 3: Copy all your third party component and module files across from your Mambo directory.

Please note that you should only copy the files belonging to those components and module across to your Joomla folder – DON’T try to reinstall the components, you will overwrite your content of any installed components or modules. Don’t overwrite the standard components and modules – you can find a list of these on the Joomla site, in the link provided right above.

Step 4: Update your Configuration.php file in your Joomla directory.

The configuration file that comes with the new Joomla installation will be called configuration.php-dist

Update the following settings:

$mosConfig_host = ‘localhost’;

This is normally set to localhost

$mosConfig_user = ”;

MySQL username

$mosConfig_password = ”;

MySQL password

$mosConfig_db = ”;

MySQL database name

$mosConfig_dbprefix = ‘jos_’;

You will probably have to change this to ‘mos_’ if you are upgrading from Mambo!

$mosConfig_absolute_path = ‘/home/yoursite/public_html/joomla-path’;

Where ‘/home/yoursite/public_html’ will be determined by your specific hosting setup (this is normally the Apache path) and ‘joomla-path’ is the path to your new Joomla files. No trailing slash

$mosConfig_live_site = ‘http://your_joomla_site.com’

This is a very important setting! You need to set this to the URL that will be used to access your site.

For example, if you normally type in a www in your URL, you should make the live site

$mosConfig_live_site = ‘http://www.your_joomla_site.com’

For testing your Joomla installation your live site should therefore be

$mosConfig_live_site = ‘http://www.your_joomla_site.com/joomla-path’

with the relevant www or not, as the case might be.

Save the file and rename it to configuration.php

Run the SQL script that is included with the Joomla files in your current MySQL database using PHPMyAdmin.

/installation/sql/migrate_Mambo4523_to_Joomla_100.sql

Step 5: Test your site.

Go to the Joomla directory and run your site from there. Everything should work! Please note, you might have some problems with your Admin panel and your WYSIWYG editor – I have some special notes about that below.

Also, if you are using SEF or any of the third party SEF components you must remember to change your htaccess.txt file to .htaccess. My suggestion is really that you should test your site without SEF and without the third party SEF components first. When I did my upgrade I only switched on the SEF components when everything was copied over and Joomla up and running. You stand the risk of getting false negatives if there are settings in your htaccess file that are not correct (in other words, you might think that you have a problem with your Joomla installation and in the mean time it is the SEF setting that is not working) If you really want to test your SEF in your Joomla installation, remember to change the RewriteBase / in your .htaccess file in your Joomla directory to reflect the Joomla directory path.

Step 6: Make the transition

Once you are happy that Joomla is running, you now need to to move your Joomla files to your current Mambo directory. This could very well be the root of your server (in other words, most Mambo/Joomla installations are made in the root so that you access the site by just typing in http://www.your-site.com/.) The problem now is to make this a smooth transition.

I suggest that you backup your Mambo files into a subdirectory on your server. Create a directory therefore called ‘old-mambo’ or something like that and copy (or move) all your Mambo files into this directory. Of course, to be very safe, you should also make a copy of all these files onto your local hard disk (and should do this BEFORE you start moving your files around!)

Once your files have all been moved into the ‘old-mambo’ directory, you should move the files from the Joomla directory into your root. Once again, this can be quite tricky depending on which FTP program you use. I suggest you ‘play around’ first on another non-critical setup to practice. Essentially you are moving files from a sub-directory into the root.

Step 7: Update your Configuration.php again!

Update the ‘live-site’ and ‘absolute-path’ settings in your Configuration.php file again to reflect the fact that you are NOT running from a Joomla directory any more but from the root (if that is where your Mambo was installed originally). Also make sure that the settings to your cache folder is correct.

After your upgrade you might experience problems with your WYSIWYG editor – Problems such as :

When you try to open a popup, for example when you try to insert an image into your content, or a table, you might get this message and the popup will show a blank window:

“tinyMCE object reference not found from pop up”

You might also get this error or something similar:

error tinyMCE has no properties

A commenting system is essential when you start a blog. This provides a mechanism for people to interact with your content. Mambo does not have comments built in, but there are various options for getting someone to comment on your content.

The two Mambo components that I have evaluated are MosComment and AkoComments.

MosComment is a really simple component to install and I tried it first. You can download it from MamboForge.net

There are two problems with MosComment which is why I decided to go for AkoComments in the end:
1. You have to hack the main template file to get it to work. This means that if you ever do a reinstallation of Mambo, or you change your template, it will stop working.
2. You cannot select which categories or sections or content items you want to have comments for. You get comments for EVERYTHING. This is not quite what I wanted, since I only really wanted comments to be applicable to the Blog items.

So I tried AkoComment. The first problem was where to get hold of it! It is not available on Mamboforge.net. You can download it from the author, Arthur Konze,’s site – www.mamboportal.com
http://www.mamboportal.com/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=46&func=download&filecatid=1273

You have to register on his site first to get access to the download area though.

The component installed without problems and it is nicely configurable. You can choose two different methods of commenting – switched on by default for a specific Section, or switched on per content item via a MamBot. I chose to have it switched on for my whole Blog section.

But it didn’t work! No commenting buttons appeared or anything. After some scratching around and thinking I decided to install the MamBot as well – you can download it here:
http://www.mamboportal.com/component/option,com_remository/Itemid,46/func,fileinfo/parent,folder/filecatid,1274/

Well, what do you know – it looks like the whole commenting component ONLY works if you install the MamBot as well – whether you choosed to apply the comments to a whole section or turn it on and off per content item.

The only blogging tool that I’ve used so far is WordPress and really , WordPress is GREAT for creating sites where blogging is the main purpose. Although, with its latest functionality for creating other pages apart from ‘posts’ you can build some pretty impressive sites just by making use of this tool.

Mambo is a lot more sophisticated than WordPress (read – more difficult to learn)! Once you have mastered the Mambo however, you can build VERY impressive sites with it. It has all the functionality that you would need to advertise your company, build a community site, set up a shopping site, maintain a company knowledge base on an intranet etc etc.

I wanted to use Mambo to set up this website advertising and selling our Web Hosting, Web Design and Web Marketing services. But I also want to keep a company blog with latest news of projects, lessons learnt and tips and tricks for various products and tools.

So, let’s get cracking at getting Mambo set up for blogging…

Firstly, let’s look at the main components of a blog and see if Mambo can provide the functionality:

Blog type functionality:

01. Post items and let them appear in date sequence. You also want to have the author name and publish date appear at the top of your post.

Can Mambo do this? YES

02. People (whether registered users or visiting guests) should be able to comment on your posts

Can Mambo do this? No, but there are add-on components that allow you to do this. The two that I evaluated are MosCom and AkoComment.

03. The items that you post in your blog should be able to belong to a category or categories.

Can Mambo do this? Yes, although Mambo only allows one to link an item to ONE category. WordPress, for example, allows one to link your posts to mulitple categories. The advantage of doing this is that you can then find an item easily through multiple routes.

04. WordPress automatically creates menus for you so that you can acces your posts/items by date.

Can Mambo do this? Unfortunately this is not the case with Mambo. The only way in which you can access your items by date is when you archive them.

05. Create an RSS feed of your blog so that other people can add your content to their site. Also sometimes called content syndication.

Can Mambo do this? Mambo does have syndication functionality, but whether you can set it up specifically to syndicate your blog remains to be seen…

Blogs also sometimes have something called Trackbacks, or Pings. Trackbacks can help you keep track of which other blogs are making references to your blog. There are ways of integrating Trackbacks with the commenting systems, but this involves some programming.

For now, let’s assume that Mambo offers enough to at least set up some basic blogging functionality, so let’s make a start!

The most difficult thing to decide on is how to structure your content. In my case, I wanted to have a normal structure (in other words, having Sections, with Categories inside them, and having my content all fit into neatly into each Category. But I also wanted to have a Blog, where I could post items on a regular basis and these items could really fall into any category. On the other hand, I didn’t want ALL my content to appear on the blog. It took me a couple of days of thinking about this before deciding on the following:

I created a section called ‘Blog’. (Remember that ‘Section’ is the topmost level. Each section can have multiple categories). This Section will be my main blog and will contain all the categories under it that I want to have published as part of my blog. So, for example, will it contain a category called ‘Latest News’. It will also have Categories such as ‘Mambo tips’, and maybe ‘WordPress tips’ etc. The problem with doing it like this though is that you really lose the power of having Sections->Categories->Content.

Why do I say that? Well, I now have a category called ‘Mambo tips’ in the section called ‘Blog’. It will definitely make more sense to rather let this category belong to a section called ‘Mambo’ instead.

What I could also have done was to just have a ‘Latest News’ category in the ‘Blog’ section. Then the blog entries would consist of a short introduction to the article, with a ‘read more’ at the bottom that doesn’t go to the full article in Latest News, but to another full article that I wrote in the Mambo Tips category in the Mambo Section.

But for now, this is the way that I am doing it and I will see how it goes.

Watch out for a next post with information on which of the two commenting components, MosComment and AkoComment, I think is better to use.

So what is this Joomla thing anyway and why should I use it to design my web site?

The fact is that Joomla is one of the easiest ways to quickly design and create your own website. You can easily create a wonderful looking website with loads of functionality. WordPress is another way to create and manage your own website – but more on WordPress somewhere else.

Joomla started life as an Opensource Content Management System called Mambo. In August 2005 a split took place between the core developers of Mambo and the owners of the Mambo name. The developers decided to continue the development of this software under the name Joomla and most of the community that previously supported Mambo have now thrown in their weight behind the new product.

You can install Joomla from the Fantastico Panel that comes with all our hosting plans. You need to have PHP and a MySQL database available, but these are also included with ALL our hosting plans, so it really is easy to get it up and running on your site.

If you would like to see Joomla in action, you can check out this demo site:

http://demo.joomla.org

In this demo you will see the front end of Joomla ( in other words, an example of a website that you can build with Joomla).

You can also log into the administrator section, where you would go to add new content (in other words, text, pictures, file downloads etc) to your site. Select the administrator option and use the username and password provided on the site to play around with the back end of the site.

But what if you don’t like the look and feel of this site?

No problem! Joomla has literally hundreds of free templates available – one of my favourite sites is this one – Mambo Hut, your source for free Mambo/Joomla templates!

Joomla comes with a lot of built-in functionality but there are also thousands of free components and modules that you can add on to expand the functionality.

The other nice thing about Joomla is that there are lots of forums that offer free support and guidance. The problem normally with freeware is that support is provided not through any licensing fees that you pay, but through a community that all contribute and therefore gain themselves in the long term. Joomla has a very active community, and it is therefore very easy to get support for any possible problem.

The Joomla forum and all the extensions to Joomla in the form of components and modules can be found on http://www.joomla.org

Everybody knows that it is much easier to develop a website on a local server first before uploading it to the actual web server. The turnaround time for testing and fixing is just that much quicker using a local server.

Typically one would not really set up an actual Linux server to work on, although that is certainly possible and lots of companies do exactly that, but we prefer to make use of what is commonly known as a WAMP server – a portable, standalone application that combines Windows, Apache, MySQL and PHP/Perl. A WAMP server therefore is like running a fully fledged Apache server on your Microsoft Windows PC.

There are various popular options available for running a local Apache server on your PC – XAMPP is very popular and when you develop in Joomla, JSAS is a standalone Joomla server that can be downloaded from http://www.jsasonline.com. You just need to realise however that JSAS is not really free any more since you now need to sign up for a charter membership to download the latest version.

I have never managed to get as far as trying JSAS though, since someone introduced me to the UNIFORM server a couple of years ago and that is all that we have been using since.

The advantages of using the Uniform server are:

It truly is portable. The whole server can be zipped and unzipped and it runs right from that specific location, whether from your desktop, a flash drive, C drive, D drive – anywhere.

It has a small footprint. The whole Uniform server zip file these days is below 15MB. This is excluding your Joomla installation though, which migh push it up to about 50MB

It is really, really easy to install and run. There is absolutely nothing to do, just unzip and double-click on Disk Start.vbs. Select the default settings, say ‘Yes’, you do want to start MySQL and the server will start. Please note that the one sticking point that you might run into (but this is valid for almost all of the localhost servers), and that is that port 80 needs to be open. Often Skype has a setting to use port 80 for connecting, so if your uniform server is not running, check your Skype settings and untick the option where it wants to use Port 80 as an alternative for connecting. Vista users will also have a problem with the security controls built into Vista. There is a nice guideline for solving this on the JSAS site which also applies to the Uniform server. You can read about it here:http://www.jsasonline.com/vista-setup.html

It is easy to duplicate and backup. We have a standard Joomla installation of the Uniform server that we just clone to get started with a new Joomla website. You can load your favourite Joomla components into your ’basic’ version. Just make a copy of that whole folder, rename it and you have a new instance of the server running.

When you are finished building your site, the next step is to upload from your Uniform server to the web server on the Internet. Typically you would require access to your domain control panel, as well as an FTP client.

Melaina Gross, from Cantaloupe web design, contributed this tutorial on how to upload your local Joomla installation. The tutorial was developed for a Joomla 1.0.x installation, but all the steps are still exactly the same, except for updating your configuration.php file, since the structure of the file has changed between Joomla 1.0.x and 1.5.x

http://www.tm4y.co.za/joomla-tutorials/upload-your-joomla-local-installation.html

The tutorial has now been updated to include the configuration settings for the configuration.php file for Joomla 1.5.x.

Download Uniform server with Joomla 1.5.10 pre-installed by clicking here.

Please note, the username and password for this Joomla installation is admin/password

Please change this after your installation to a production server – don’t blame me if your site gets hacked due to an insecure username and password!

The standard Newsflash module selects a random article from a specific category. You can choose how many articles to show and whether to show a read more link or not, as well as whether you should have linked titles or not.

For the site that I was building, I needed something to show the latest article from a category and not show any images in the intro.

Piece of cake, I thought, surely there are lots of extensions available to do this? Well, there are, but most of them have some type of problem associated with it. One is absolutely superb and that is obviously the one I will recommend.

First, the duds:

1. YouJoomla Newsflash Pack

This is the worst of them all seeing that you have to pay $20 for the module (comes packaged with both Joomla 1.0.x and Joomla 1.5 versions) and there is a no money back policy.

The puchase process for this module is hair raising to say the least, with various signups at various points before you actually get your product.

The functionality of the module is disappointing. You can choose the ordering (good), the number of items to display (good), the number of characters (good) and choose whether or not to display the intro image (good). But that is about as far as it goes.

The choice whether to have the read-more button displayed or not has disappeared, and the worst of all, this module uses the item ID of the page that it is published on, not the item ID of the article that it refers to. In practice this means that if you click on the title of the article in the newsflash box, it will display the article with all the module settings of the page that it came from, and not with the modules of the page that your article actually lives on.

I tried to submit a support ticket but the support ticket system kept on telling me that my email is invalid. I sent an email directly to the developers and to date (about 4 days later) have not heard anything. In the email I asked for my money back in a last-ditch attempt to salvage the situation but needless to say, it is probably a lot cause.

2. Latest news with Intro Text

For some reason it makes the whole intro text clickable, with no read-more link/button, which is what I required. So no go. Luckily this one was free.

Luckily I did not spend too much time further but came across…

The clear winner

The clear winner here is the Ultimate Content Display from Joomlaworks. Hey, it works! And it is free!

Why didn’t I try this one first? Because I was searching in the extensions site among the ‘newsflash’ and the ‘latest news’ modules and not among the ‘article listings’ which is where it is filed in.

This module did exactly what I wanted it to do and it has a plethora of settings and options. Take a look at the parameters:

Section 1:

Section 2:

Section 3:

As can be seen, the actual purpose of this module is to display certain of your articles in a flash-rotator box and you have various options for setting the fading/sliding motion parameters, with a choice of technology as well. The module is really so versatile that it can be used in a couple of ways. It worked for my purpose as well, which was just to show the latest article from a specific section/category and click through to that article with a read more – such a simple thing to want happen but apparently not that simple to implement!

SOBI 2 is one of the first CCK (CCK: Content construction kit) for Joomla!.

Already in 2006, as no one talks about CCK for the content management system Joomla! Sigsiu.NET developed a Content Construction Kit for Joomla!. Designed as a business directory (online business index) SOBI 2 could already be used for every kind of directory. Therefore everything what the operator of a website wants to get listed in a directory like companies, clubs, persons, shops or products can be created.

Content Construction using SOBI 2 Fields Manager

All fields which are necessary for your directory can be created easily using the Fields Manager. There are several field types to choose from like text input fields, text areas (w/o WYSIWYG editor), check boxes, check box groups, select lists (drop down lists), simple text fields or a calendar field.

For text inputs fields there are additional settings available. You can define a text input field to be used for an URL address, an email address, a link to an image or to a video/audio file. According to this setting the entered data will be shown in the views with the necessary syntactical format.

Each custom field created in the Fields Manager can be configured extensively. Choose if the field is required or not and define the field length (width of the field and number of possibly entered characters).

To configure the search integrated in SOBI 2, select for each custom field the desired search method. Select if the data from this field should be searchable or not and if the text to be searched for should be entered using the text input field of the search function or using a separate drop down list.

Each field can be set up in this way that it is visible only for the administrator in the Entry Manager. Thereby you can add your own notices to the entries but the author of the entry cannot see them or you can show information in each entry which the author cannot change.

SOBI 2 shows the data in two views. In an overview (Category View) all entries of the directory will be shown in such called V-Cards (similar to small business cards). Each entry has a link to its detailed description (Details View). You can define which fields should be shown in which view with a simple click in the Fields Manager. Therefore it is also possible that a field isn’t shown in any of the views. With that you can ask personal data from the authors of your entries without showing them on the site.

And if you want to earn money with your directory, you can easily define in the Fields Manager for which information the author of an entry hast to pay a fee. Also the amount of the fee is freely selectable.

You can set up the order of the custom fields either using the Fields Manager of you can use the comprehensive possibilities of the in-built template engine.

During installation, SOBI 2 creates by default several custom fields for a business directory. You can easily extend them by any number of your own fields. Or you can simply delete these standard fields and create your own fields.

Clear Overview by Classification into Categories

For a better lucidity of the directory, the entries within SOBI 2 are divided into categories. For that a Category Manager is available. With the Category Manager you can create, edit and also delete categories within your directory.

Create as many categories as you like with an unlimited nesting depth. That means, each category can contain sub categories which can contain sub categories as well, and so on.

Using the Category Manager it is also possible to add several categories at once.

An entry can be assigned to one or more categories. For a simple directory it is also possible to assign all entries automatically to a pre-defined category. Thus, the category selection by the user isn’t necessary.

Presentation of Images in your Directory

According to the configuration of SOBI 2, the author of an entry can upload up to two images for each entry. At this, the images will be reduced to a pre-defined size. These image can be shown either in the V-Cards of the overview (Category View) and/or in the detailed view of the entry.

Additionally you can install the SOBI 2 Gallery plugin. This plugin allows your users to upload an additional unlimited number of images to their entries. These images will be shown in the detailed view as small thumbnails and on click they will be shown enlarged with lightbox effect.
The sizes of the thumbnails and of the lightbox images will be setup in the administration of the plugin.

Simple Adding and Editing of Entries

Of course you can add all entries in your directory by yourself. But in the field the authors of the entries will add themselves to the directory. For that, SOBI 2 provides an entry form, which will be called from front-end of your site. This form contains the fields you defined in the Fields Manager. You can change the layout of this form if you use the built-in template engine. Thereby you have for example the possibility to divide the input data into tabs. This is useful especially if you have a lot of fields.

SOBI 2 can be configured in this way only registered users of your site can add entries to your directory. Or you allow adding entries for guests too.

Define if the authors of the entries are allowed to edit their entries or not. However, only entries made by registered users of your site can be edited by them again.
Of course only the author of an entry can edit his own entry. As administrator you have always the possibility to edit each entry also from front-end.

For the administrator of your site there is an Entry Manager in the administration panel of SOBI 2 available. With this Entry Manager you can easily create, edit or delete an entry. You can also edit those fields in the Entry Manager which are not accessible for the author of the entries in front-end.

Publishing an Entry only for a certain Period

Especially for directories with paid entries, but also to keep your directory up to date, SOBI 2 has the possibility to associate the entries with an expiration date.
Either you set up a fix period for which the entries will be published (e.g. 90 days) or you define the expiration date of an entry individually.
Additionally the author of an entry can define the expiration date by himself using a calendar field. This is meaningful especially for directories with advertisements.

If an entry is expired, it can be renewed by the author himself. A defined period prior to expiration, a message visible only to the author of the entry will be shown. By the use of an additional link the author can renew his entry.

Simple Email Generation

SOBI 2 sends out emails on occurrence of different events like adding, editing or renewing entries by the author or also if an entry is approved by the administrator. It is adjustable if only the author of the entry and/or also the administrator will get an email. The Joomla! user group which will get the administrator emails is freely selectable. Also a selection of several groups is possible.

Sending out an email can be set up separately for each event.
If an entry isn’t free of charge, an email with the list of all costs will be sent to the author in any case.

You can define the content of the emails separately for each event, comfortably in the administration panel of SOBI 2. For that different placeholders are available to address your customer individually.

A previously defined signature will be added at the end of each email.

Different Views for Presentation of Categories and Entries

As a complex Joomla! component, SOBI 2 has different views for front-end.

The main view of SOBI 2 typically consists of the presentation of the main categories. Additionally the entries within those main categories or all entries in the directory can be shown in V-Card view.

By clicking on one of the main categories, the visitor gets on the category view of the selected category. Here he will see the sub categories and V-Cards of the entries of this category or of the sub categories.

By default the visitor will get on the detailed view on an entry via the V-card of this entry.

Additionally to the category views there are other views available which will show V-cards of entries. E.g. it is possible to show the newest/latest, the most popular or recently edited entries or only the entries of a specific user.

An alpha index is available to show entries and categories (or only entries) starting with a certain letter in V-Card view. The alpha index is configurable and the letters can be arranged.

The meta keywords entered for the entries, can be used as tags. All tags of an entry can be shown in the detailed view as links to lists with all entries with the same tagged word. Using tags is recommended for a good indexing in search engines.

Why don’t adapt your SOBI ?

SOBI 2 can be used „out of the box”.
But SOBI 2 can also be adapted individually to your site. This adaption take place in different levels.

SOBI 2 has its own style sheet file (CSS). Nearly almost all elements of SOBI are addressable by CSS classes (or IDs) and therefore configurable. Change specifically margins, colors or fonts only by changing the CSS file.
The CSS file can be edited comfortably in the SOBI 2 administration panel, using an editor with syntax highlighting.

If you want to make advanced adaptations to the shown data of the entries in your directory there are separate templates available for the V-Card view and for the detailed view. With some HTML skills and using the so called template commands, you can easily create your own views.

It is also possible to create your own template for the add entry form.

All templates are editable comfortably in the SOBI 2 administration panel, using an editor with syntax highlighting.

Extensive diagnosis systems integrated:

Use the debug mode of SOBI 2 to log occurring problems in a file. You can set up the debug level by yourself. Write each notice or only severe problems into the file. The debug mode can be switched off completely.

If you create your own templates, the template parser is helpful in finding syntactical errors while developing your template.

SOBI 2 has certain requirements on your server. To detect if your server meets the requirements you can execute the SOBI 2 built-in system check. With one click you learn if there could raise problems in using SOBI 2 on this server. If you already have a problem, let SOBI 2 create a system check file with all settings of SOBI 2 to inform other helpful people about SOBI 2 on your server to get help.

SOBI 2 will be updated regularly. To know if there is a new version of SOBI 2 available, just execute the built-in version checker.

A very common question from Beginners is whether I should choose Drupal or Joomla or other CMS?

I had to make this tough decision 2 years back and I thank myself everyday for choosing Drupal over other CMS. I am glad I did not quit when I found some things difficult.

Drupal has a superior architecture and very SEO friendly. It can cater to your needs, it can be used for a simple FAQ site or a very large million visitor site.

Here are some Key pros and cons of the two systems.

Drupal
* Rock solid & high quality platform
* Real multi-site-feature (only one installation for several sites)
* Any Kind of user groups & user permissions, OpenId compliant in Version 6
* Can run membership and community sites, not only CMS etc
* Powerful templating system. Any XHTML or CSS template can be easily converted to Drupal.
* Drupal needs a little time investment to realize all the huge possibilities of Drupal
* Clear, high quality code and API (easy to integrate with other solutions etc)
* Flexibility and no known limitations
* Many high profile sites use Drupal (e.g.: MTV UK, BBC, the Onion, Nasa, Greenpeace UK, New york observer. )

Joomla
* If you are not techy its good to start
* Easy install & setup with your mouse
* Easy learning curve
* Cannot integrate other scripts etc. to your site
* Generally you cannot create high-end sites, without investing huge amount
* No SEO out of the box, URLs are not search engine friendly.
* Server resources utilization is more compared to drupal
* Only one site per installation
* No Single Log-in to several sites
* No User groups & permissions
* More intuitive administration user interface
* Some polished modules for things like calendars, polls, etc.
* Modules cost you money

 System Requirements:

Drupal can work with MySQL and Postgres while Joomla is known to support only MySQL

Drupal can work with Apache or IIS while Joomla is known to support only Apache

Joomla support SSL logins and SSL pages. Drupal not known to support it.

Site Management

Drupal has free add on for Workflow management. Joomla not known to have one.

Drupal has inbuilt Translation manager. Joomla has a Free ad on for the same

Drupal has more granular priviledge managment

Interoperability:

Drupal has iCal support [Add on] , Joomla not known to have one.

Drupal is XHTML Complaint. Joomla not known to be one.

Drupal has excellent versioning and Audit trail which Joomla lacks
